Comparison

ZeroPlan and Microsoft Project,
compared honestly.

ZeroPlan and Microsoft Project cover the same core, but only Microsoft Project is available now, far more complete and widely used in industry; for a course or a job that expects it, use it. ZeroPlan is a project management app in development at Black Zero Labs, and it isn't released yet.

In development: ZeroPlan

  1. Where Microsoft Project is better today

Microsoft Project has been a standard scheduling tool for decades. Today it does far more than ZeroPlan can claim, and it's what many employers and courses use.

    • Available now, with a long record in real projects
    • Mature scheduling, resources, baselines and reporting
    • Its files are a common format for sharing schedules
    • Many courses, books and people who already know it
  2. Where ZeroPlan is aiming

ZeroPlan is being built for project managers, small firms and students. In development and under testing: scheduling with dependencies and the critical path, costs and earned value, reports, task lists in and out, and undo for every change.

    • Planned: tasks linked to the real work in other Black Zero Labs apps
    • Planned: workload views
    • Optional AI help through Lab Partner, with every change reviewable and undoable
  3. The honest gaps

ZeroPlan can't be downloaded yet, and correctness and release testing are still under way. No file types or performance figures are promised yet, so don't plan on exchanging Microsoft Project files with it.

  4. For students

If your course teaches Microsoft Project, learn Microsoft Project; check with your school about access. The ideas carry over to any tool: tasks, dependencies, the critical path and earned value. Our guides teach those by hand.

  5. Which to choose

Choose Microsoft Project if you need a proven tool today or your workplace uses it. Follow ZeroPlan if you want a newer project app that shares one project with the rest of the Black Zero Labs suite; join the waitlist to hear when it opens.
