Flowmotion and Manim
for math animation.

Flowmotion and Manim both animate math, but only Manim is available today: free, open source and mature, and an excellent choice if you're comfortable writing Python. Flowmotion is being built for people who'd rather edit visually and time animation to their narration. It isn't released yet.

First release: Flowmotion, Cutroom

  1. Where Manim is better today

Manim is a Python library for mathematical animation, first written for the 3Blue1Brown channel and now also maintained as a community edition. It's the stronger choice today on almost every practical count.

    • Available now, free and open source, on Windows, macOS and Linux
    • Equations through LaTeX, so nearly any notation can be set
    • Scenes are code: exact, repeatable and easy to keep in version control
    • Narration synced inside the script, through the manim-voiceover plugin
    • A large community, documentation, plugins and years of examples
  2. Where Flowmotion is aiming

Flowmotion is motion graphics software for lessons and explainers, designed around editing scenes directly instead of writing code. In development builds, graphs draw themselves, equations build and morph step by step, and animation is timed to the narrator's words, with captions and subtle sound effects.

    • No programming: scenes are edited directly (the editing interface is built and in review)
    • Animation tied to words in your recorded narration, set on screen rather than in code
    • Optional AI help: Lab Partner lets your AI app build and edit scenes, and every change can be undone
  3. The honest gaps

Flowmotion can't be downloaded yet, has no community or library of examples, and its equation support is narrower than LaTeX's while it's in development. It plans Windows first, with Mac later. If you need to make videos now, use Manim or another released tool.

  4. Working with a whole lecture

Manim renders scenes to video files, which you then edit in a separate video editor. Flowmotion is designed to share one project with Cutroom, the Black Zero Labs video editor for long lectures, so scenes go into the edit without exporting. Cutroom is also in development.

  5. Which to choose

Choose Manim if you're happy in Python and want full control today. Keep an eye on Flowmotion if you'd rather not write code, or want animation driven by your narration; join the waitlist to hear when it opens.

The apps are designed to open the same project, so nothing has to be exported between them. You'll install only the ones you use.

Questions

Good to know.

See the roadmap

That's the aim: math animation edited directly, without Python. It isn't released yet, so today Manim, or a general motion graphics tool, is what you can actually use.
