How to turn a
script into an animated video.

To turn a script into an animated video, split it into scenes, sketch one picture per idea, check every point is covered, record the narration, then animate and edit scene by scene. Here's the order that saves the most rework.

First release: Flowmotion, Cutroom · Planned: Storyroom

  1. 1. Split the script into scenes

Mark where each new idea starts. A scene is one idea with one main picture, usually 20 to 60 seconds of narration. Give each scene a short name you'll use everywhere: in files, in the edit and in your notes.

  2. 2. Storyboard one frame per idea

For each scene, sketch the key frame: what's on screen when the idea lands. Rough boxes and arrows are enough. The storyboard is where you find scenes with nothing to show, or two ideas fighting for one picture.

    • One key frame per scene, plus how it changes
    • Note any diagram, chart or equation it needs
  3. 3. Check coverage before animating

Make a checklist of every point the video must make and tick off which scene makes it. Gaps and repeats are cheap to fix now and expensive once a scene is animated.

  4. 4. Record, then animate to the voice

Record the narration from the final script. Then animate each scene to its recording, timing each move to the word that introduces it, and keep a consistent style across scenes: one palette, one type scale, one kind of motion.

  5. 5. Assemble and export

Put the scenes in order, trim the gaps, add short transitions and music if any, then export. Black Zero Labs is building Storyroom (planned) for the script and storyboard, with Flowmotion and Cutroom (in development) for the animation and the edit; none is released yet.

Good to know.

Long enough for one idea to land, often 20 to 60 seconds of narration. If a scene runs past a minute or two, it usually holds two ideas and splits cleanly.
